Each month classes are held at a three day weekend session, usually on the last weekend of the month, and include several different subjects. The head instructor lives out of state and is only present during these monthly sessions

Between sessions the class meets twice a week for practice. Beginners will work with senior students during the practice times.

These sessions are an important part of the learning process and should be attended regularly.

On Saturdays there is a free one hour practice that is open to the public.

On Wednesday night there is a 2 hour practice lead by the school’s senior students. Only students enrolled at Stone River may attend the Wednesday practice.

"Stand like a mountain, move like a great river."

Beginners will be introduced to the first 8 movements with a thorough explanation of the basic principles and plenty of time spent on repetition and correction.

At each of the monthly sessions you will attend 6 hours of classes over the 3 days.

Instruction includes 3 Tai Chi form classes, 2 morning Qigong classes and a Deepening class.

An audio CD of the form will be available for purchase during the weekend session.

Form class will focus on instruction, correction and lots of repetition of the Tai Chi form.

Qigong consists of simple movements as well as standing meditation. Qigong is a complete system of physical and energetic training that emphasizes cultivation of energy. Because its movements are easier to learn then Tai Chi, students are invited to join the morning Qigong classes right from the beginning. It's a perfect complement to Tai Chi.

Deepening class focuses on the internal aspect of Tai Chi, primarily the play of opposites in ways that create greater stability from an active center.

Push Hands or “Sensing Hands” is work that introduces the martial arts aspect of Tai Chi, but rather then being competitive, it is an interpersonal exercise practiced in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Push Hands develops the principles of Tai Chi including sensitivity, adaptability, and mindfulness. Through working with others we learn to use Tai Chi to cultivate relationships, to develop conflict resolution strategies, and to live in harmony with others.

Between sessions students are expected to practice daily. Relaxation, awareness, and vitality will naturally increase over time. Patience and practice pay off!

When first learning Tai Chi the focus is on form and structure. Practicing the physical movements precisely helps improve body awareness, which is important for both physical and energetic development. After a time, as students become more proficient, emphasis slowly shifts from the external form to more internal aspects.

Don't rush! Tai Chi is a path or way, not a destination.

An unhurried, non-competitive approach is the best way to learn Tai Chi. In the Stone River school emphasis is on slow and steady improvement and self awareness. Each individual is unique, so it's important to respect yourself and work within your natural limitations. Regardless of your learning style or level of physical endurance, with patience and daily practice, you will make steady progress. Perseverance furthers.
